Abstract

Purpose: The objective of the study was to determine the efficacy and safety of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or Priapus Shot (P-Shot) as therapy of erectile dysfunction (ED) and sexual satisfaction in men with mild-to-moderate ED. The study objective was to determine the change in the erectile functionalities as well as sexual satisfaction rates during the post-PRP therapy, and to monitor the negative events.

Techniques: Eighty men including 30-65 year old men with mild-to-moderate ED as determined by an International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF)-5 with a range of 11-21 were used. PRP was injected into the penile shaft and corpora cavernosa of each of the participants in a single injection. The IIEF-5 and Sexual Satisfaction Score (SSS) were also used to measure the measures at baseline, 3 months and 6 months. There were also unfavorable incidents identified.

Hidden results: Erectile functioning improved significantly on 3 months and 6 months. The baseline and 3 months IIEF5 (p < 0.001) and 6 months IIEF5 (p < 0.001) were 15.3 and 18.6 and 19.2 respectively. Similarly, the level of sexual satisfaction also enhanced tremendously because the average SSS at 3 and 6 months was 63.8 and 71.4 respectively ( p = 0.001). The disastrous incidents were not serious and not prolonged with bruising at the injection site and penile mild discomfort rated as the most common at 10 and 3.8 percent respectively. Significant negative incidences were absent.

PRP therapy (P-Shot) appears to be a safe and effective procedure that improves the erectile functioning of patients with mild-to-moderate ED, as well as their sexual satisfaction. One can assume that PRP demonstrates a promising future of becoming a feasible alternative to the traditional ED practices, especially in the scenario, when the patient prefers to undergo a regenerative treatment. Despite the mentioned positive results, the treatment still needs more research involving more patients and long-term observation to determine this and to test the long-term outcomes of PRP therapy.
